Chapter Seven

Capone was a wolf down to his soul, but at the moment, he was mad enough to spit kittens. Not only had Sy Wren entranced him with his siren’s call, Kat had intervened where he shouldn’t have.

Maybe the cat shifter didn’t understand the severity of the situation. Despite the fact that Kat was an exotic dancer, the gorgeous man was too sweet to have a malicious bone in his body. He saw Sy as a friend, not someone that could enthrall half the city with just a simple song.

Capone could see that he needed to have a little talk with Kat about interfering in things that were none of his business. He wasn’t sure if the dancer was taking advantage of the liberties Capone allowed the man or if Kat truly felt compelled to help his friend.

Either way, their conversation would have to wait.

Right now, he needed to deal with Daemon Brimstone. The demon owed him a favor now, and Capone was ready to call it in. He needed someone to do a little recon work. A demon that could slide in and out of shadows was perfect for the job. The favor owed him by a demon wasn’t something he would usually cash in on so quickly but he needed someone to gather information for him on some nefarious activity occurring in an office building just west of his docks. Often in his line of work, information was power. And right now, someone that could walk in the shadows would give him just the power he needed.

There were two issues with shadow walking, the first of which was how much energy it took for a demon to walk through the shadows. They only did it in the rarest of occasions because it drained them physically, even short trips. The second issue was that it left an energy signature that other demons could follow like breadcrumbs right back to the demon shadow walking.

It fully explained why Daemon hadn’t simply walked through the shadows to get from his place to here, instead, driving his car. Well, that and the wards cast to protect his establishment from just such a thing Capone had paid so handsomely for. Guess the spells worked.

Instead of going directly to his desk when he walked into his office, Capone headed for the liquor cabinet. He didn’t usually drink unless he was relaxing, but it had been a trying day. It seemed like pretty much everyone in Phanta City had lost their damn minds in the last few weeks.

Phanta City did have a reputation of being a place where weird was embraced, but even that had tested the limits lately. Capone almost dreaded each coming day simply because he didn’t know what it would bring. He’d even gone as far as beefing up security around his territory just to be on the safe side.

After pouring himself two fingers of whiskey, he tossed it back in one quick swallow, and then poured himself another. This time he sipped the smooth liquid as he turned to face the people that had followed him into his office.
